How to Choose the Right VPN Server Location: A kemangVPN Guide
Server location determines the latency and speed you get. Here is how to choose one, and when a distant server actually makes sense.
VPN apps show dozens of server locations, and most people pick one at random or leave it on automatic. Yet this is the single setting with the most noticeable effect on everyday speed.
The basic rule: closer is better
Your data has to travel a physical distance to reach the VPN server. That distance shows up as latency: the delay between sending a request and receiving a reply. A server in the same city adds a few milliseconds of latency. A server on another continent can add hundreds.
If you are in Indonesia and your only goal is to secure your connection, the Jakarta server is almost always the best choice. Your data does not need to leave the country at all.
When to pick a more distant server
There are legitimate reasons to choose a server in another country:
- Testing your own service from abroad. Developers and site owners often need to see how their service is reached from other regions.
- Working with a team or infrastructure in a specific country. If your work servers are in Singapore, connecting through Singapore can make more sense than going through Jakarta.
- Problematic ISP routes. Sometimes your ISP's default route to a destination is poor, and going through a VPN server in another location gives you a better path.
Outside reasons like these, choosing a distant server only adds delay with no benefit.
How to compare for yourself
The simplest method: connect to one server, run a speed test, and note the latency and speed. Repeat for two or three other servers. Within a few minutes you have a real picture for your own connection, which is more useful than any guess, because the results depend on your ISP and location.
Pay attention to latency, not just download speed. For a connection to feel responsive, low latency often matters more than a big megabit number.
The closest server is not always the fastest
This often surprises people. Internet routes do not always follow geographic distance. Sometimes your ISP has a good route to Singapore but a roundabout route to a server that is actually closer. That is why comparing directly is always more reliable than assuming.
Switching servers while in use
Switching servers drops the connection briefly. Apps that are running may need to reload. So it is best to settle on your preferred server at the start, and only switch when you have a reason to.
kemangVPN offers 84 servers in 45 countries, including Jakarta. The full list is on the server locations page, and you can switch at any time at no extra cost.
