Why your game ping is high
Ping is the time it takes data to travel from your device to the game server and back. It depends on distance, but also on the path your ISP chooses.
Sometimes an ISP sends traffic on a detour, for example through another country before it reaches a game server in Singapore. Sometimes a link is congested at peak hours. In those cases your ping can be high and jumpy even on a fast internet plan.
When a VPN lowers ping, and when it does not
We want to be straight about this, because a lot of claims out there go too far.
- A VPN can help when your ISP's route to the game server is poor. With a VPN, your traffic goes to our server first and then from our network to the game server. If that path is cleaner than your ISP's, ping can drop and become steadier.
- A VPN will not help when your ISP's route is already good. A VPN adds one extra hop, so ping may go up a little.
- A VPN does not fix weak Wi-Fi, a crowded home network or a slow device.
So the only way to know is to try it on your own connection.
Pick a server close to the game server
The location you choose matters most. The rule is simple: pick a VPN server that is close to you and close to the game server.
| Your game server is in | kemangVPN server to try first |
|---|---|
| Indonesia | Jakarta |
| Singapore or Southeast Asia | Singapore, then Jakarta |
| Another region | The nearest location on the server list |
We run 84 servers in 45 countries with 1 to 10 Gbps ports. Your speed still follows your own ISP connection, and we do not limit quota or bandwidth.
Test first with the 1-Day Pass
Instead of subscribing right away, try the 1-Day Pass for US$1.00. It does not renew automatically.
A fair way to test:
- Play without the VPN and note the ping shown in the game.
- Connect to the Jakarta server, play on the same game server and note the ping.
- Repeat with the Singapore server.
- Compare at the same time of day, for example in the evening when networks are busy.
If ping is lower or steadier with the VPN, you can move to the Monthly, 6 Months or 1 Year plan. If there is no difference, you have your answer without spending much.
Protocols that suit games
Most online games use UDP, so a light protocol feels more responsive.
- WireGuard is available on selected servers and is designed to be lightweight. Try it first when your chosen server supports it.
- OpenVPN over UDP is a good alternative where WireGuard is not available.
- IKEv2 works well on phones because it reconnects quickly when the signal changes.
All connections use 256-bit encryption, and we do not log traffic.
Play on PC, mobile or console
One kemangVPN account covers 10 devices.
- PC and laptop: follow the Windows tutorial or the macOS tutorial.
- Mobile: follow the Android tutorial or the iPhone tutorial.
- Console: PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch usually cannot install a VPN app. Set the VPN up on your router instead. With a Mikrotik router, follow the Mikrotik tutorial and connect your console to that router. Other routers can be set up manually with OpenVPN or L2TP/IPsec.
The general setup guide covers the basics. If anything does not connect, see connection help or reach us on WhatsApp or at support@kemangvpn.com.
Frequently asked questions
Will a VPN always lower my game ping?
No. It can lower ping when your ISP's route to the game server is poor, but when the route is already good, the extra hop may raise ping slightly.
Which server should I use for online games?
Choose the server closest to the game server. Try Jakarta for game servers in Indonesia and Singapore for Southeast Asia.
Which protocol suits gaming?
WireGuard on servers that support it, or OpenVPN over UDP. Both suit games that use UDP.
How do I use a VPN on PlayStation or Xbox?
Consoles usually cannot install VPN apps, so set the VPN up on a router such as Mikrotik and connect the console to it.
Can I try it before subscribing?
Yes. The 1-Day Pass costs US$1.00, which is enough to test ping on your connection, and it does not renew automatically.
